USA 4-1 Paraguay: Balogun's double opens the hosts' campaign in style

The United States wanted a statement to open their home World Cup, and they got one. Pochettino's side beat Paraguay 4-1 at a loud SoFi Stadium, scoring four without ever looking rushed and taking early control of Group D.
Balogun leads the line
Folarin Balogun was the difference. He scored twice, took his chances coolly, and gave the hosts a cushion long before the hour. Paraguay could not live with his movement, and once the second went in the night had a settled feel to it.
A VAR mix-up, then clarity
The first half had its odd moment. The referee booked Tim Ream for a foul, then changed the call after a VAR review: the yellow belonged to Paraguay's Miguel Almiron, not the American defender. A short stop, sorted without fuss, and the USA carried on as they were.
Reyna puts the gloss on it
Gio Reyna had the last word with a late strike that emptied the bench and sent the home crowd home happy. Christian Pulisic, withdrawn at half-time, watched the closing stages from the sideline.
What it means
Three points, four goals, and top of the group before Australia and Turkiye arrive. It is one game, and Group D will get harder. But a home World Cup can be a heavy thing to carry, and the USA made the first step look light.
