Australia secure victory over Turkey in Group D opener
Australia could not have asked for a better start. Nestory Irankunda gave them the lead in the 27th minute, finishing a move laid on by Patrick Okon-Engstler, and the Socceroos never looked back.
Türkiye pressed for a way in but found Australia organised and patient. The result was put beyond doubt in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe doubled the lead.
Three points and a clean sheet at BC Place is a statement of intent from a side many had written off before kick-off.
